THE FISHING FANATIC'S
ROD WRAPPING ROOM

"Thread art, then, is one of the more important skills that we should possess if we can already build a superior fishing instrument. Excellent thread work will in no way make an inferior rod great. However, it will make an already great rod more desirable to own and fish."
-Dale Clemens,
Custom Thread Art, 1982

WHICH THREAD SHOULD I USE?
Size 'A' thread is generally used on most fishing rods, however, you may want to use a finer 'OO' size for ultra lights or size 'D', which is thicker, on your heavier boat and saltwater rods.

Standard thread becomes translucent when applied with finish, and if you wish to retain the solid color, you need to apply several coats of color preserver before the final epoxy finish. Standard type thread with color preserver often seems to have an added sparkle over the other type of nylon wrapping thread, NCP.

WHAT IS NCP THREAD?
NCP thread needs no color preserver to retain its solid color, however, it is somewhat thicker than regular thread, and rod builders will often apply color preserver to NCP thread to assist in removing air from it before applying the final finish.

WHAT ABOUT SILK?
Silk thread was traditionally used on all fishing rods. Now, however, it is extremely rare to see silk wrap on anything but bamboo (split cane) fishing rods.
